Carbon Footprint in Industrial Plants

Evaluation and calculation of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions under GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 standards for three key industrial complexes, highlighting the sustainable leadership of the San Joaquín Plant.

The challenge of industrial decarbonization

To consolidate its leadership in the food and beverage sector, the corporation needed to understand and manage the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of its operations. The objective was to establish a solid baseline by quantifying the environmental impact of three of its main operational centers: San Joaquin Plant (beer and malt), Sauces and Spreads Plant, and Monagas Plant (palm oil extraction). This allows the organization to anticipate global market demands, optimize resource consumption, and demonstrate a tangible commitment to climate change mitigation.

Methodology and operational boundaries

The inventory was structured by integrating the guidelines of the GHG Protocol with the principles of the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard, ensuring transparency, exhaustiveness, and long-term comparability. Custom calculation tools adapted to the actual operation of each facility were developed, utilizing standardized emission factors from the IPCC (2006). The study strictly delimited Scopes 1 (direct emissions from combustion and refrigerants) and 2 (purchased electricity), establishing clear strategies for the future integration of the supply chain (Scope 3).

Project achievements and Net Zero roadmap

The diagnoses provided the corporation with an auditable baseline of its climate footprint. This gathering of primary data allowed the identification of key areas for energy transition, such as automated sub-metering, controlled management of refrigerant gases, and efficiency in effluent treatment plants. As next steps, a roadmap has been drawn up to establish Science-Based Targets (SBTi) and prioritize initiatives that gradually integrate value chain emissions (Scope 3), reaffirming its commitment to a net-zero future.
