SCADA and Telemetry at Oil Platform

Integration of an advanced remote monitoring system and SCADA software for the supervision of PDVSA's critical electrical infrastructure in Lake Maracaibo.

The challenge of critical supervision in the oil sector

The main challenge on this oil platform, was to ensure the constant supervision of an extensive network of electrical cabinets and Motor Control Centers (MCC). It was necessary to implement a highly reliable remote monitoring system to identify out-of-range variables, avoid operational process deviations, and prevent both material and personal incidents in this mission-critical infrastructure.

Distributed network architecture and industrial protocols

The architectural solution consisted of a distributed network composed of three local cabinets located in modules A, B, and C of the facility, centralized through a main cabinet (PDC) in the Central Control Module. This network integrates power switches (GE and ABB) and network analyzers (GE PQM II and GENIUS) communicating seamlessly through robust industrial protocols such as Modbus RTU over RS-485 (Daisy Chain topology) and Ethernet IP in star topology.

Telemetry in the Power Distribution Center

The scope of telemetry covers the platform's most critical assets: the main input Switchgear, the 2500 KVA transformers (monitoring thermal variables), the Power Distribution Center (CDP), and the Firefighting and Auxiliary Services cabinets. The system acquires digital signals (dry contacts) and analog signals to measure voltages, currents, frequencies, power factor, and active energy in real-time, in addition to the physical status of the breakers and automatic transfer switches (ATS).

Centralized control with SCADA Software

For data management, a SCADA software was installed on the main server, structured into monitoring, configuration, and reporting sections. The interface allows operators in the control room to view interactive electrical diagrams of the plant and manage a rigorous tiered alert system ("Minor Alarm" and "Major Alarm"). These alarms automatically trigger strobe beacons (red or yellow) and sirens in the facility to ensure an immediate personnel response.

Operational reliability and industrial safety

The integration of this telemetry and SCADA platform ensures operational continuity and the reliability of the oil platform's power supply. By providing predictive detection and immediate alerts regarding current fluctuations, voltage drops, or overheating, the system optimizes the monitoring of high-value electromechanical equipment, drastically reduces the risk of unplanned downtime, and raises industrial safety standards at the platform's facilities.
